MET Drone Wide Body II – Time Trial and Triathlon Helmet
The MET Drone Wide Body II is the second generation of an aero helmet used at WorldTour level and in Ironman races. It was developed and refined in the in-house The Tube wind tunnel in Talamona, which brings directly measurable advantages over its predecessor. MET quantifies the gain at up to 13.5 s/40 km or roughly 5 W less drag under identical conditions. At 430 g the helmet is among the lightest long-tail models and therefore remains comfortable even on long triathlon splits. It is worn in competition by, among others, Tadej Pogačar, underlining its focus on maximum aerodynamic performance.
- Wide Body Design directs airflow over the shoulders and thus reduces turbulence and aerodynamic drag.
- Linear Tail Design enables a lower head position and improves flow attachment at the back.
- Proven aero gain: up to 13.5 s/40 km and approx. 5 W faster than the previous version.
- Ventilation with 3 Low-Drag openings and internal channels for cooling without an aero penalty.
- Mag-Clip Shield: clear visor included; optional tints Fume and Mirror available.
- Safe-T Advanced adjustment system for a precise fit; sizes M and L.
- Weight just 430 g; colors Glossy Black and Glossy White.
- CE certification according to EN 1078.
Technical details and features
The shell is produced in In-mould polycarbonate with an EPS core, combining strength and low weight. Three strategically placed Low-Drag intake vents feed an internal channel system and provide noticeable cooling without disturbing the airflow. The Mag-Clip Shield is attached using flat neodymium magnets, sits securely against vibration and has an antifog coating for clear vision; a clear shield is standard, with further tints optional. The helmet intentionally comes without an additional rotational protection system like Mips, in order to uncompromisingly optimize the form factor and aerodynamics for speed. The significantly extended Tail makes it easier to hold a low head position in the aerobars, with the shoulder area serving as an aerodynamic transition.
Applications and benefits
The Drone Wide Body II plays to its strengths in time trials and triathlon — wherever seconds count and your position remains stable. If you can keep your head position consistently low, you especially benefit from the long rear shape and the broad shielding of the shoulders. Thanks to efficient ventilation, the helmet is suitable not only for short TTs, but also for longer triathlon distances, as are common in the Swiss race calendar. The clear shield provides unobstructed vision in changing light, while optional tints make sense for sunny days at Lake Zurich or in the Valais. Decisive added value: noticeably lower wattage at race pace, without sacrificing comfort.
Fit, sizes and accessories
With sizes M and L, the helmet covers a wide range of head circumferences, while the Safe-T Advanced system handles the fine adjustment. For even more comfort on long splits, the optional DualGel forehead pad can be used; it keeps sweat out of your eyes and conforms to your head shape. For different light conditions, Mag-Clip shields in additional tints are available, which can be changed in seconds. The combination of precise fit, lightweight construction and streamlined shape makes the Drone Wide Body II a solution for ambitious time trialists with a clear focus on performance. Athletes at WorldTour level already use it — an indication of its orientation toward top speed.
Aerodynamics from the MET wind tunnel
The helmet was developed in the in-house The Tube wind tunnel, where MET analyzes aerodynamics and thermals specifically for bike helmets. This setup makes it possible to systematically optimize shape details such as the broad forehead area, the long tail and the inlet geometry for minimal drag and sufficient cooling. The result is the documented improvement of up to 5 W and 13.5 s/40 km compared to the predecessor. At the same time the system weight remains a remarkably low 430 g for a long-tail helmet. For competitive sport in Switzerland — from the local individual time trial to triathlon — this means real time gains with controllable temperatures under the helmet.
